THE INSURGENTS ARE INCREASING

Bound to Get Congressman Smith's Scalp

Hank Says "Doc" is Sore Because His Vest is Not Up to the Pie-Counter
-------
Hank Smith's troubles are increasing as the ranks of the insurgents are getting larger. Up to date the following have come out in the open and have declared they are after his scalp:
     Ex-Postmaster "Doc" Smith, of Adrian.
     Postmaster Edwards, of Jackson.
     Would-like-to-be-Postmaster Helber, of Ann Arbor.
This morning's Free Press contains the following special from Washington:
Washington. D. C.. March 26.-- "Doc" Smith, of Adrian, who was turned out of the postmanship at Adrian, has now been here ten days, and no longer tries to conceal the fact that he is after Representative H. C. Smith's scalp. Thus far the two have never met, but they exchange a running fire of caustic compliments through third parties. "Doc" avers that if "Hank" has a spark of manhood and honor left he will stick to the compact made with Chas. Townsend, of Jackson, not to be a candidate for a third term. Incidentally "Doc" charges "Hank" with ingratitude for turning down the postmasters in his district after they had, as he alleges, paid his election expenses to the tune of $3,500. He has not been able to discover definitely that "Hank" is a candidate, but his suspicions are aroused and he declares that his namesake can never be elected. "Hank" retaliates with the compliment that "Doc" was friendly as long as his vest was next to the pie counter, but has discovered his ("Hanks's") unfitness to represent the second district since his decapitation.
