SHE GAVE THE "1862" BOULDER
-------
Big Campus Relic, Gift of Mrs. Sheehan
-----
SHE DIED WEDNESDAY
-----
Was the Mother of John Sheehan and Mrs. Slater of This City
-----
The funeral of Mrs. Martha Sheehan, who died Wednesday morning, was held this morning at 9 o'clock at St. Thomas' church from the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Slater, of Thompson street.
The deceased was born in 1814 at Portlaw, Tipperary county, Ireland, her maiden name being Martha Pike. In 1841 she married Cornelius Sheehan and in 1842 she came to America, accompanied by her husband and his father. They settled in New York city and six years later removed to Ann Arbor, where Mrs. Sheehan had lived until a few months ago, when she went to Detroit to visit her son, Thomas Sheehan. Since that time she had failed in health gradually, and became so ill that she could not be removed to Ann Arbor. Thus she was a resident of this city nearly 54 years. She was the mother of nine children, seven of whom are living- Captain Dan Sheehan of Niles, Thompas P. and Dr. M. C. Sheehan of Detroit, Patrick H. Sheehan of Calumet, Robert Sheehan of Chicago, Mrs. Margaret Slater and John V. Sheehan of this city. She also leaves thirty grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
The large boulder that now stands on the campus, inscribed "1862," was presented by Mr. and Mr.s Sheehan to the class of that year. It was taken from her lot on N. Fifth avenue. The deceased leaves a comfortable estate which will be divided among her children. By the death of Mrs. Sheehan, the city loses one of its most respected and esteemed citizens. Beside her children she leaves many friends who will always have a kind and loving remembrance of her.
