Six Canvassers Were Working the City on Wednesday.

ARRESTED BY MARSHALL

One Told Justice Gibson a Good Story and Was Let Loose Until Morning. He and His Partners Left Town During the Night.

Six canvassers quietly folded their tents and stole away early yesterday morning and their whereabouts is unknown. They had been sampling and canvassing the city. They gave away a big bottle of what they called Hoffman's sarsaparilla, price $1. To help pay their expense they sold a little bottle of so-called liniment for 25 cents. One of the men was taken by Marshal Warren to Justice Gibson's office on Wednesday evening. He told a remarkably smooth story that they represented a big firm located at Ft. Scott, Kas., with branches in Chicago and New York. He impressed both the marshal and justice with the honesty of his story and was let go until morning. But when morning came he and his companions were not to be found. Justice Gibson looked up the supposed great Hoffman firm and could not find that they had ever had a speaking acquaintance with either Bradstreet or Dunn. It is also believed that both the great Hoffman sarsaparilla and liniment was a decoction of cheap drugs. The six canvassers are probably now working fresh pastures.
