William Leftradge, the notorious colored character who, in company with three others of his race, one a woman, held up Fred Joerndt at the farmers' sheds on Catherine street last October and robbed him of his valuables, is in trouble in Detroit.

This time Leftradge is locked up at the Detroit Central police station on the charge of stabbing Zeb Smith, another colored man, in a saloon brawl at Hastings and Clinton streets, one of the toughest colored localities in the city.

After the affray, the Detroit Free Press says that Leftradge was found in a dwelling on Rivard street, where he was surrounded by beer bottles, empty and otherwise. He was as happy as could be, and insisted on explaning that he was having a fine time when the police swooped and spoiled his indulgence.

Say," said he, "I certainly has been havin' a good time. I admit that physically he was bigger and had no reason to hit me on the jaw. A hit on the jaw makes a feller hot. Zeb, he was my friend-- same as though he was my brother. I like him, but he had no business hittin' me on the law. It's all right to talk 'bout law and these things, but when a man gits hit on the jaw, he has to do something. Momentarily he forgits like."

Leftradge was sentenced here for his hold-up job, to ninety days in the county jail. After he was released he left the city.
