Congressman Smith's congressional committee has named May 28 as the date and Adrian place where the next republican congressional convention will be held.

And hence all is excitement in republican circles. "Doc" Smith, the former Adrian postmaster, was in Ypsilanti last night and in Ann Arbor this morning, leaving for Jackson. He is camping on Henry's trail. talking about broken pledges and telling about how unreliable the congressman has become.

Festus Metcalf, Smith's superintendent of census enumerators was also in be city today.

The old congressional committee has been knocked to pieces. Priddy was appointed postmaster at Adrian and is succeeded by George A. Wilcox. Dr. Hanna was appointed postmaster at Jackson and is succeeded by E. L. Griffin of Napoleon, and Helber, who was not given the same show as the other committeemen was succeeded by Capt. John W. Haarer. The committee organized at Wayne yesterday by electing Gen. Fred W. Green, of Ypsilanti, chairman, C. L. Edwards, of Monroe, secretary, and Geo. A. Wllcox, of Adrian treasurer.  O. T. Hoover, of Chelsea. was among the other committeemen present. The apportionment of delegates was as follows: Jackson 26, Lenawee 27, Monroe 16, Washtenaw 22,  Wayne 12. It will take 52 votes to nominate.

It was said at Wayne that H. C. Smith will have Lenawee's 27 votes, Charles E. Townsend will have Jackson's 26, W. W. Wedemeyer will have Washtenaw's 22, M. R. Bacon will have Wayne's 12, and Burton Parker, Monroe's 16.

Unless some of these candidates slip up on their home delegations, it will be seen that the fight is apt to be a hot one.

A Washington dispatch intimates that the congressman was disappointed at an early convention being called and that the committee called it in opposition to his wishes. The general impression  has been here that the congressman wanted an early convention. He is settling up his affairs in Washington to be home early next week to enter the fight personally.

As announced in another column, in addition to the other candidates named above, Mayor Copeland of Ann Arbor, has entered the race.
