MISS STANGER'S NARROW ESCAPE

From Being Run Down by a Careless Driver

FELIX MARTIGNONE

The Driver of the Horse Which was Going at a Furious Pace

Had it not been for the quick presence of mind of Miss Lydia R. Stanger bookkeeper at the furniture store of Henne & Stanger, of 117 W. Liberty street, she might have met with injuries of a serious character about 12:30 o'clock Monday noon by being run over by a horse and wagon.

Miss Stanger had just reached the corner of Liberty and Main streets and was about to cross to the south side of Liberty street on her way to the Henne & Stanger store, when a horse and wagon driven by Felix Martignone, an Italian who keeps a fruit store, came up Main street at a furious gait. Without attempting to pull in his horse, Martignone drove madly into Liberty street. Miss Stanger had just stepped from the curbing about to cross the street. Had it not been that she saw her danger and ran ahead there is every certainty that she would have been run over. A number of persons who saw the affair, said that it was one of the narrowest escapes from injury they had ever witnessed.

Martignone was plainly under the influence of Iiquor, in fact he was iIn such a bemuddled state when he reached his store that it was with difficulty he was able to unload his wagon of the bananas which it contained.
