Mrs. Mattie Newman, proprietress of the Newman house, whose jewelry was stolen from her room last Monday afternoon, is suffering keenly from the loss of her property.

It is not on account of the intrinsic value of the jewels that she is so greatly worried, she says, but because several of the pieces were given her by her late husband and father. The watch which was taken was her husband's gift, while the gold locket which the thief carried away contained some hair which had been taken from her father's head before he died.

The watch which cost $50 and which was a present to her by her husband before they were married is engraved on the inside of the case with the initials "M. G."

Mrs. Newman thinks she knows who took the property, but does not wish to swear a warrant for his arrest until she has secured further evidence.
