SAMUEL TODD LEE, OF THIS CITY, TAKES A BRIDE

She Is Miss Emily Griggs Parker, Preceptress of Rizal Institute, Negros Island

Mrs. Betsey Lee, an attendant at the University hospital , has received a letter from her son, Samuel Todd Lee, who is now in the Philippines, saying that he was married there on Sunday, June 8. His bride was Miss Emily Griggs Parker, who is a graduate of Middlebury College, Vermont, and now preceptress of Rizal Institute, Bacolod, Negros Island, P. I. The nuptial knot was tied at the home of Mr. George W. Beattie by a clergyman of the Baptist denomination.

Mr. Lee was one of the best known young men of this city, where he has a host of friends. He took special courses in English and Latin in the high school. At the opening of the war with Spain he enlisted with Co. M and gained rapid promotion at the beginning of the campaign against the Filipinos. He returned here to visit his mother but his love of military adventure introduced him to re-enlist in the regular army. He returned to the Philippines, where he was after some time appointed to the position of deputy superintendent of schools in Negros Island, where he has jurisdiction over 40 native teachers and about 100 American teachers.

There is an incident in young Lee's life which is quite interesting and at the same time thrilling. He was in Havana while the ill-fated Maine was in the harbor. He was one of the military that for some reason or other was sent to board her. He was late in reaching the tug that was to carry him to the man of war. Just as he reached the wharf the tug was leaving and he attempted to jump into it but missed his footing and fell. When he arose the tug had gone and he was left on shore. The next he heard of the Maine she was blown up.
