The Rate will Now be $7.00 Per Ton

Meeting Friday Night

Local Coal Dealers Then Decided to Put Up the Rate for the Hard Product

A meeting of the coal dealers of the city was held at the office of Michael Staebler, 119 W. Washington street Friday evening. The purpose of the meeting was to consider the raising of the price of hard coal from $6.75 to $7 per ton. It was decided to make this increase in view of the strike difficulty at the coal mines and because it is said that it is almost and impossibility to get hard coal to his city. After the meeting there was some talk about a further increase in the price of hard coal in this city later, providing there is no settlement of the miners' troubles. One coal dealer said, "The price of hard coal in Battle Creek is now $2.50 per ton, and I would not be surprised to see that figure reached here providing the trouble at the mines is not soon ended." The increased price of hard coal went into effect this morning and will probably continue until the strike among the miners is called off and maybe longer.
