                                    ---------------------

But for the timely and heroic aid of Constable Charles Fox, the house of Christian J. Bauer at 2061 Day street, might have burned to the ground Sunday and little seven-year-old Kittie Bauer burned to death.

About 11 o'clock, Constable Fox, who lives on Day street near the Bauer house, heard screams for help coming from the latter place. He ran there and found the home in flames, while Mrs. Bauer was heroically endeavoring to smother the fire that had caught the dress of her daughter, Kittie. Fox, after much effort, managed to subdue the flames, and the little girl was finally rescued by her mother, although not before the child had been badly burned on the arms and about the body.

The fire originated from a gasoline explosion. Little Kittie Bauer, it appears, attempted to light a fire in the kitchen stove. She used gasoline to help her in her efforts and had just poured a quantity of the liquid into the stove when the explosion took place.

Had it not been for the prompt arrival of Fox on the scene, the house might have been burned to the ground and some of the inmates burned seriously. Dr. D. W. Myers attended to the injuries of Kittie Bauer, who suffered terribly from the burns she received. She will, however, recover.
