INDIANS ON RAILWORK WORK

Northwestern Company Believes the Innovation Will Prove Successful.

The Northwestern Railroad company is experimenting with Sioux Indians as laborers on the Elkhorn line, northwestern Nebraska, and believes the innovation will prove successful, says a special dispatch from Lincoln, Neb., to the New York Times.

For several months it has been almost impossible to get sufficient laborers for the road around Long Pine and Gordon to do either section work or shovel coal. A gang of Italians engaged in coal shoveling at Long Pine became dissatisfied and threatened to quit unless concessions were made to them.

In its final extremity the railroad secured a number of Indians, discharged the Italians and put the red men to work. They have brought their squaw and papooses to the camp. Others will be engaged.
