John Miley Came In 1827
Interesting Reminiscences from Ann Arbor Pioneer Who Left Here in 1844.
John Miley, of Niles, Mich., is visiting his niece, Mrs. A. Berry, of Olivia Place. Mr. Miley is one of the early settlers of Ann Arbor, having moved here with his parents in 1827, and settling on the farm known as the old Day farm, now owned by Prof. Lloyd on Washtenaw avenue.
Mr. Miley remembers well the first load of brick that was drawn for the first of the University buildings, what is now the main building. Then the campus was farming land was enclosed by an old fashioned log fence. At that time there were a good many Indians passing their house on the way to and from Detroit. He remembers also of picking hazel nuts and wild plums on the ground now occupied by the M. C. freight house. A few years later he was engaged in the furniture business in the old Bucholz block, now standing on Detroit street.
Mr. Mile moved from Ann Arbor in 1844 so there are very few people now living who were here at the time he was.
Mr. Miley is nearly eighty years old but can out-walk many a younger man.
