Michigan Defeats Wisconsin by 6 - 0

Details of the Greatest Game Ever Played in Western Football Before 20,000 Spectators

Chicago, ILL., Nov. 1. - (Special)  As soon as Michigan got the bull she dumbfounded Wisconsin by smashing through.their Impregnable line for 3 and 5 yards at a jump, Maddock making the most noticeable gains. Michigan, by consistent work, carried the pigskin without a single stop or once losing possession of the ball, and after ten minutes of play shoved Maddock over tor the first touchdown. At this stage of the game it looked as if Michigan would run up big score, and and an offer made in the Wisconsin stand of even money that Michigan would score 28 points found no takers. Again Michigan started down the field for a touchdown. The Wolverine linebackers carried the ball to the ten yard line, where it was lost on a fumble. A second touchdown seemed certain, but Jones was badly hurt and when finally reinstated, he was visibly handicapped by the injury and when Michigan toad forced the ball to within n few inches of Wisconsin's goal line, they were held for downs and Wisconsin punted out of danger. Sweeley was forced to punt and Fogg caught it just as Redden hit him like a thunderbolt which caused him to fumble the ball and laid them both out, Fogg having to be carried off the field. Meanwhile Maddock picked up the fumbled ball and amid breathless excitement headed for tln undefended goal line, but was overtaken by a flying tackle and downed, the coveted place still 30 yards away. Time was called here, score 6 to 0.

At the end of the first half Ralph Hoagland predicted that Wisconsin would win yet, as Wisconsin had braced visibly and Michigan seemed visibly weakened after her tremendous efforts.

At the beginning of the second half, things looked rattier dubious. Could Michigan hold out? The story of play shows that they not only held out, but completely outplayed the Badgers in the second half also.

The feature of the second was Michigan's five tries for a goal from place kicks on 35-yard line. Three of then went under the bar between posts. Gregory's long passes were perfect. Every man played the game of his life. Michigan gained mostly on tackle bucks, end plays with few exceptions not being successful.

Marshall Field, Chicago, Nov. 1. - The crowd rapidly assembled. The seating capacity of 15,000 was rapidly filled to overflowing, and a line of applicants for general admission is lined up outside along Ellis Avenue for two blocks each way. The betting ranged about 10 to 8, wit!h heavy betting at that odds. Rooting began at 2 p.m., and was something terrific. Michigan slightly outrooted Wisconsin, and the locomotive yell was a big success.

Marshall Field was Ín excellent condition. A strong south wind 'blew up the field, but the was too warm for ideal football.

Wisconsin appeared in the field at 2:10 with Michigan a close second. The Michigan supporters continued to drown Wisconsin's rooting. The Michigan band paraded the field and the rooters sang "Oh, how he ran."

Michigan lined up as follows: Redden, left end; Palmer, left tackle; McGugin, left guard: Gregory, center; Carter, right guard; Maddock, right tackle; Sweeley, right end; Weeks, quarter; Heston left half; Herrnstein, right half; Jones, full

Wisconsin lined up as follows: Abbott, left end; Bertke, left tackle; Long, left guard; Skow, center; Lerum, right guard; Hanmerson, right tackle; Bush, right end; Fogg, quarter; Liljequist, left half; Juneau, right half; Vaaderboom, full.

Michigan won the toss and chose the south goal. At 2:30 the teams were in position. Wisconsin kicked off to McGugin. Herrnsteln started the gaining by skirting the end for five yards. Jones made 3 yards through center. Wisconsin held the second buck. Then Jones made another 3 yards, the ball now being in the center of the field. Jones made 3 yards more. Maddock went through for two 5-yard gains. Jones made 5 yards, then 3 more. Heston gained 5 yards on an end run, and Herrnstein went around for 12 yards. Ball on Wisconsin's 20 yard line. Maddock made 1 yard through center and Jones 2 through the same place. Maddock made 5 yards and Jones 1, through right tackle. Maddock went through left tackle for 5 yards. Jones gained 5 more in two bucks. Ball on Wisconsin's 2 yard line. Heston then went over for a touchdown in just 6 minutes of play. Herrnstein heeled the kickout Sweeley kicked the goal. Michigan 6, Wisconsin 0.

Wisconsin kicked off to Sweeley, who ran it back 15-yards. Herrnstein went round left end for 12-yards, and Heston around right end for 5 yards. Jones made 2-yards through center. Sweeley punted 35 yards, the man beIng downed in his tracks by Herrnstein. Michigan held the first buck, and then threw back an end run for a loss. Michigan was here penalized 5 yards for offside playing. Vanderboom went through center for 5 yards. Wisconsin was forced to kick, Sweeley returning 15 yards. Maddock bucked left tackle for 2 yards, then center for 5 yards, then 5 yards more. Heston made 5 yards and Palmer 5 through tackle. By bucks alternating on the tackles Maddock made 3 yards, Palmer 1, and then 4 more. Maddock made 5 yards through right tackle and 5 yards through left. Jones 5 yards through the same place. Palmer bucked 5 yards through right tackle and Jones 4 through center. Maddock broke through left tackle for 10 yards, and Palmer for 5 yards through right tackle. Wisconsin held Jones on the next buck. Michigan's ball on Wisconsin's 30 yard line, with 5 yards to gain on the second down.

At this point the bleachers on Michigan's side which were only temporary affairs, collapsed carrying down about a thousand people. About twelve people were hurt, but there was no inuries more serious than a broken Iimb. All the injured were from Wisconsin.

The game continues. Wisconsin got the bail on a fumble and Juneau ran it round right end for 30 yards. Wisconsin was forced to kick and punted 35 yards. Maddock bucked right tackle for 5 yards and then 5 more. He made 3 yards through left tackle. Jones made 8 yards through center. Wisconsin was given the ball for holding in the line, on the 50 yard line. A buck through center only made 1 yard, and was thrown back 4 yards on on end run. Wisconsin then kicked 25 yards to Michigan 30 yard line. Herrnstein made 12 yards. Palmer failed to gain. Jones made 2 yards through center. Heston skirted right end for 8 yards. Ball in the center of the field. Maddock made 5 yards on a tandem buck, and Jones 5 more on similar play. Herrnstein gained 3 yards on a straight buck and Maddock 5 more through left tackle. Maddock bucked 2 yards more. Time was taken out for Jones, but he was soon on his feel again. Palmer gained 5 and 10 yards in successive bucks. Maddock bucked for 10 yards. Ball on Wisconsin's 20 yard line. Palmer made 5 yards through right tackle. He was held on the second attempt. Palmer then gained 5, 3 and 3 yards on successive bucks. Ball on Wisconsin's 5 yard line. Maddock made 4 yards. Palmer was held twice on the 1 yard line and the ball went over to Wisconsin. A 15 yard punt was returned 5 yards by Weeks. Michigan's ball on the 25 yard line. Wisconsin then threw Michigan back, and got the ball on a fumble. Juneau running 20 yards recovered, with a loss of 8 yards to the center of the field. Michigan held the next buck. Juneau fumbled, but Wisconsin punted 35 yards to Weeks, who was downed in his tracks by Abbott. Ball on Wisconsin's 30-yard line. Maddock bucked tackle for 5 yards and was laid out temporarily. Maddock bucked 6 yards, then 4. Palmer was held. Maddock also was held. Lawrence was sent in to take Jones' place. Sweeley punted 35 yards to Juneau, who was downed in his tracks. Vanderboom bucked 5 yards, and Juneau skirted the end for 10, and again for 5. Ball in center of field.

Vanderboom bucked one yard. Wisconsin kicked 45 yards to Sweeley, who returned the ball 5 yards. Sweeley punted 40 yards, the runner being downed in his tracks. Here Wisconsin fumbled Herrnstein getting the ball and making a beautiful 50 yard run to Wisconsin's 15 yard line being overtaken by Vanderboom, after a hard and exciting chase. The applause at this point was something terrific. Driver went in at full and Vanderboom was shifted to half. Maddock bucked left tackle for 2 yards. Lawrence for 5 yards. At this point time was called.

Score at end of first half: Michigan 6. Wisconsin 0.

The rooting on both sides is terrific. The betting is strong, mostly at even money.

Between the halves, the rooting continued. Michigan though out-numbered clearly out-rooted her rival. The "Gee, hee! Gee, haw!" yell was used with great effectiveness.

SECOND HALF

Wisconsin chose north goal and Palmer kicked off for Michigan, sending the oval to the 15-yard line. Wisconsin returning 5 yards. Michigan held the first buck. Vanderboom made 5 yards around right end, and Driver one yard through center. Vanderboom went around left end and Juneau around for 5 yards each. Juneau fumbled, Maddock falling on the ball on the 30 yard line. Heston made 2 yards around right end and Palmer made 3 through tackle. By steady bucking Michigan advanced the ball15 yards. Herrnstein was thrown back for a loss of 2 yards. Lawrence tried a place kick, but failed. Wisconsin kicked off from the 25-yard line. Wisconsin held for downs and then by steady bucking advanced the bail to center of field. Wisconsin was forced to kick. Juneau punted 80 yards to Sweeley who was downed in his tracks. Heston made yards around right end but Herrnstein was thrown back 5 yards. Sweeley punted 35 yards, Wisconsin returning 15 yards and being downed by Maddock on the 52 yard line. Wisconsin bucked center for 5 yards. Vanderboom goes round Ieft end for 3 yards. Wisconsin is held on the next buck, but Maddock is laid out temporarily. Maddock breaks through the line and tackles Wisconsin tor a loss of 4 yards. Driver punts 30 yards to Sweeley, who is downed in his tracks. Heston goes around right for 5 yards and again for 12 yards. Wisconsin holds Maddock's buck and the second buck. Sweeley punts 55 yards to Wisconsin's 15-yard line. Vanderboom goes around end tor 3 yards. Juneau is thrown back for 3 yards. Wisconsin kicks to Sweeley on 55 yard line. Lawrence bucks center for 5 yards. Wisconsin holds two bucks and is penalized 5 yards for off-side play. Palmer bucks center for 3 yards. Wisconsin holds the next buck. Michigan tries the quarterback kick but it fails and it is Wisconsin's ball. Wisconsin tries kick play, but is thrown back 5 yards. .Michigan holds the next buck. Driver punts 35 yards to Sweeley, who is downed on the 35 yard line. Maddock bucks the right tackle for 5 yards. Herrnstein is thrown back on attempted end run. Sweeley punts 60 yards and Maddock downs his man in his tracks. It is Wasconsin's ball on their 20 yard line. Graver takes Redden's place. Driver breaks through the line for 10 yards. Juneau is thrown beck. Michigan holds the next buck and Wisconsin punts to Sweeley on her 55 yard line. Sweeley is downed in his tracks. Maddock on fake play makes 5 yards. Lawrence goes through right tackle for 5 yards. Lawrence, on delayed pass, goes through right tackle 10 yards, again for 1 yard and again for 5 yards. Lawrence goes through right tackle for 5 yards. Lawrence is stopped on his next attempt. He then bucks right end for 4 yards. Only seven and a half minutes more to play. Lawrence bucks left tackle for 3 yards. The ball is now on Wisconsin's 20-yard line. Maddock goes around the right end for 2 yards. Lawrence is held. Ball on Wisconsin's 15 yard line Wisconsin holds buck. Heston is stopped on his triad. Sweeley tries place kick from the 15 yard line at a difficult angle, but fails. Wisconsin kicks from her 25 yard line to Graver in the center of the field who returns it to Wisconsin's 25 yard line. The excitement is intense. Lawrence bucks 2 yards through the center. Maddock fails to make gain. Sweeley tries place kick from the 35 yard line but fails. Wisconsin kicks from her 25 yard line. There is much wrangling. The ball is given to Wisconsin on her 15 yard line. Juneau makes 10 yards around right end. Driver bucks for 5 yards. Michigan gets the ball on a fumble and Maddock bucks for 5 yards. Wisconsin holds on the next trial. Sweeley tries a place kick from the 40 yard line but it falls short. Wisconsin returns the ball 10 yards. Michigan holds the first buck. Vanderboom tries to make an end run but is stopped by Maddock. There is only two minutes more to play, and it is growing dark very rapidly. Wisconsin punts to her 50 yard line. The ball is taken back to her 40 yard line. The teams line up on the 35 yard line and Michigan tries a place kick but fails. Wisconsin kicks from the 15 yard line to the center of the field. The game ends with the final score Michigan 6, Wisconsin 0.

When the game ended intense excitement prevailed. The Michigan team was surrounded by an admiring crowd of several thousand people. The Wisconsin rooters were profuse in their congratulations.
