SOMEBODY LOST ON ELECTION BETS

The case of William Baumgartner in Justice Doty's court Tuesday, in which Baumgartner was charged with the larceny of $40 worth of hay, was dismissed on examination. Prosecuting Attorney Duffy represented the people and Attorney Cavanaugh the defendant. The people were only able to prove that if any hay was stolen at all, only $19.25 worth was taken, which would have reduced the case to simple larceny. The amount of hay worth $19.25 was admitted by the defendant to have been taken by him, but he claimed that he owned it. A witness was asked what Baumgartner was worth. "Guess they ain't nobody worth nothing after paying election bets," he answered dryly.
