A NEW LEADER IS ARISING

Utterances Differ From Those of the Old

READ BETWEEN THE LINES

And One Can See the Fact That the New Leader Will Not Follow the Old.

The developments of the past few days indicate a new leader is about to arise in Washtenaw republican politics, and a leader who is not unfriendly in spirit towards the University. That the new leader is the senator-elect, the only Washtenaw republican saved from the local wreck of bossism, goes without saying. That his leadership is apt to start out along different lines from the old is shown by the following excerpts from his letter of yesterday:

"If others wish to fight the University that is their privilege; but I wish it distinctly understood that no power on earth can ever influence me to work against the interests of this great institution."

And again he speaks of representing the interests of all his constituents "regardless of party or creed."

Reading between the lines we can see a good deal. Evidently the principles enunciated above will differ somewhat from those followed by the older leader.
