Taxes Are Now Being Paid
The Collection So Far Has Been Very Small
Only about $500 a Day of the $95,000 to Be Collected Is Coming In, Many Try for a Reduction
Taxes have been coming in at a slow rate this year and although last Monday was the first day of collection have not averaged over $500 a day, making a total of $2,000. All kinds of people, fat, lean, light and dark, flock into the city offices and ask for a reduction. When they are told that their grievances ought to have been made known to the board of review last October they often admit that they tried to get their taxes reduced at that time, but failed.
"Taxes are always too high and if I can reduce mine, I don't care where I do it," said a good natured, fleshy lady this morning.
Last year the general collection did not begin until December 5, and this is the reason, so think the city officials, that more taxes have not been paid in this week. At the present rate the $95,000 that must be collected by January 1, would be lacking some $80,000, but as a rule the large taxpayers never come in until the last of December.
