Sample Packages Prohibited
SAMPLE PACKAGES PROHIBITED
Two ordinances were passed by the council Monday night. One prohibits the sampling of the city with foods or medicines. This will put a stop to the innumerable little packages thrown on porches, which often find their way into the hands of the babies or small children, who eat the pills or stuff themselves with the foods. Ald. Grose wanted the distributing of handbills prohibited and offered an amendment to that effect. A number of aldermen expressed vigorous sentiments against the handbill nuisances, blowing around the streets, scaring horses, etc., and others thought this feature was already covered by an ordinance. The city attorney said it was and Ald. Grose withdrew his amendment.
An amended transient traders ordinance was passed. This is just like the old ordinance which went up the supreme court in the James case and was there sustained on essential features, except that it lowers the license fees to $5 and $3 a day and $7 and $5 a day as the case may be.
