THE HUMBERTS IN COURT
-
Testified at the Trial of M. Cattani, the Banker

Paris, Feb. 12. - The Humbert family made their first appearance in the criminal courts Wednesday when the case of M. Cattani, the banker, was taken up.

Great public interest was manifested in the proceedings and the courtroom was packed. All the previous examinations of the Humberts had been held in secret, and this was the first opportunity Parisians had to see and hear the prisoners.

Mme. Therese Humbert displayed her usual bravado and coolness, her sister, Marie Daurignac, was apparently much unnerved, and the latter's brothers, Romain and Emile Daurignac, maintained an attitude of calm defiance.

The impression formed by those who have followed the day's proceedings is that Mme. Therese Humbert has all her wits about her and is what the French call a woman, a strong character. Her testimony was a mixture of an attack on usurers as the cause of her ruin, lamentations over her sufferings and half-veiled threats. She once broke in with a demand that the minister of justice, formerly M. Cattani's lawyer, be called as a witness. She said that she would tell the whole truth.

Several times she expressed confidence in the justice of her country when the story she intended to tell before the assize court was heard.
