Policeman Frank Merritt of Boston the other morning saved the life of John O'Brien, who is held at a police station as a witness, says the New York Times. O'Brien was choking with a bit of pork, and, other means failing, Merritt stuck the handle of a fire shovel down the man's throat, pushing the obstruction into the stomach. When a physician arrived, he found O'Brien none the worse for his experience.
