SAID HE WAS DR. COPELAND

Man Representing Himself to be Such Has Been

SELLING SPECTACLES

To Northville Citizens - People Refused to be Fooled and Fellow was Arrested

Dr. R. S. Copeland hs had all kinds of honors thrust upon him, but the crowning one has just come to light. According to dispatches in yesterday's Free Press a man has been traveling around Northville representing himself to be Dr. Copeland of Ann Arbor, and offering for sale a complete line of spectacles which the gullible were made to believe the "Dr." was willing to stake his reputation upon as being a little the best that were ever manufactured. But some of the good citizens of that vicinity are not ready to believe all that is told them and could not understand how a man of Dr. Copeland's reputation would find it necessary to peddle spectacles from house to house, so they wrote to this city for enlightenment in the matter. The result was that the bogus Dr. C. was arrested and taken before a justice on complaint of Hiram Holmes, a wealthy farmer. Mr. Holmes offered to withdraw the suit if the money, $25 of $30, paid for the goods was refunded.

The man agreed to refund as soon as he could sell enough spectacles to get the cash. Accordingly he was put in charge of an officer and the two are now out peddling spectacles, while the erstwhile "Dr. Copeland's" dissatisfied customers are patiently or otherwise waiting for their cash.
