Committee Appointed to Get Plans and Specifications

By Board of Education

Music Teacher Appointed to Take Place of One in Europe Full Amount of Bonds May be Issued

A large amount of routine business was transacted at Wednesday's meeting of the board of education. Several teachers were engaged and certain salaries were increased.

Miss Julia Lusby was given a position at a salary of $600, Miss Lydia Stollsteimer one at $350. Miss Bertha Tarrant, the teacher of domestic science was given an increase of salary to $700. She had been offered $800 to go to Racine, Wisconsin, and she was offered this increase to induce her to stay. She is a very fine teacher in her department and the results she has obtained with the children have been most pleasing to the patrons of the department. The district can ill afford to lose such a teacher. A new teacher of music was engaged for the coming year, while the regular teacher is in Europe. Miss Kate M. B. Wilson will have charge of this work the coming year and she comes very highly recommended. Prof. Stanley, who knows her and her work, regards her as second to none in the public school music work of the state. Her salary was fixed at $400.

Supt. Slauson recommended a new arithmetic, Progressive Commercial, for a year's trial at least. For years this question of a change has been up and finally there is hope that it may be accomplished. The one in use has been out of date for years and probably Ann Arbor is about the last public school in Michigan to use it.

Mrs. Meade was given a position of janitor at a salary of $225. It was voted to put city water in the janitors' houses and the district to pay for that for domestic use and for closet.

The letter hitherto published in these columns from Mr. Carnegie's agent relative to Mr. Carnegie's $20,000 gift for a library building, was read, and the building committee of the board was directed to obtain plans and specifications for the new building. The board invited the Ladies' Library association to appoint a committee of three to work with the committee of the board of education.

It is understood that the committee will get to work at once and at the earliest possible date will select an architect and have plans and specifications prepared for contractors to bid upon. It is thought the building may be gotten under way this fall.

The board still has some debts outstanding on the Perry school and as none of the lots which the board hoped to sell have yet been sold, it will probably be necessary to issue all or a portion of the bonds authorized by the district recently. Five thousand dollars of the amount authorized have not yet been issued. The finance and building committees were instructed to look into the matter of the outstanding obligations of the board and decide upon the amount of additional bonds that are necessary to clear up all these obligations.
