Boots are supposed to have been the invention of the Carians. They were mentioned by Homer, 907 B.C. Grecian women possessed twenty-two kinds of footgear, which may be classed as those which cover all the foot up to the ankle and those which simply tied on the top of the foot with wide ribbons or straps. The practice of shoe and sandal wearing can be traced back for some thousands of years and is probably of eastern origin. Frequent mention is made of the shoe in the Bible, from the book of Exodus to the Acts, and there is mention made of a shoe latchet as early as the time of Abraham.
