CITY ATTORNEY'S REPORT

---

The Claim Came Down Through Two Administrations-Other Old Claims Collected

---

One by one the old claims of the city outstanding when the present city administration came in are being collected and the city treasury thus being put into better shape, as the following report of the city attorney, made to Monday's council meeting, shows: To the Common Council:

Gentlemen-The matter of the taxes for the year 1900 due the city from the Ellis estate referred to me at your meeting of August 31st, I submit the following report:

In the year 1900, at the time the assessment was made, there was left forty thousand five hundred ($40,500) dollars in the Ellis estate undistributed. Thirteen thousand five hundred ($13,500) dollars of this amount was government bonds, which are not taxable, and stocks upon which the taxes were paid by the corporations that issued them. This left a balance of twenty-seven thousand five hundred ($27,500) dollars in the estate subject to taxation. The rate of taxation in this city for the 1900 was $14.54 on a thousand dollars and the taxes on $27,500 was $399.85. I have settled the matter with H. P. Ellis, of Paris, Texas, on this basis and received his draft for this amount and deposited the same with the city treasurer.

The matter of the claim of the city against Lots A, B and C of Orr's subdivision for $63.60 for sewer and water connections I report that I have collected this claim and deposited the money with the city treasurer.

The matter of the telephone pole in front of the residence of Mr. Lawrence I report that I consulted with Mr. Keech and Mr. Land, general superintendent of the telephone company, and they promised to remove the box that was obpectionable, not only on this pole, but on all other poles in the city and I am informed that the same are removed.

All of which is respectfully submitted.

THOS D. KEARNEY,

City Attorney
