BAKER ADMITS HAVING A CLUB

But Says He Never Used It on Isbell

EVERY STUDENT HAD ONE

Testifies the Defendant - But Collins Swears He Saw Only Baker's Club and Saw Baker Use It

The examination of Ray Baker, the freshman engineering student who is charged with hitting Officer Isbell over the head with a club the night of the freshman-sophomore rush was on in Justice Doty's court Wednesday afternoon.

The testimony of the officers was taken showing the resistance by the freshmen to the officers and the dangerous character of the blow Isbell received. Officer Collins saw Baker raise a club and saw a blow struck with the club. He arested Baker instantly afterwards and Baker then had the club in his hands. He was positive that the club was used by Baker. He saw no other clubs in the hands of students at this time. Some time later and in a different locality he saw clubs.

Baker took the stand and swore that nearly every one of the students out, whom he estimated at 400 or 500, had a club. He had a soft pine club and had it when Collins arrested him. He did not strike a blow with it and was not within 20 feet of the officers until Collins arrested him. He intended to put his club on a bonfire.

The examination is still in progress as the Argus goes to press.
