Nearly Half A Million Taxes In Washtenaw

The Big Amount Spread On the Assessment Rolls

The School Tax in the County Amounts to Over $120,000 -- What the Taxes Are Raised For

Nearly half a million of dollars is raise by taxation in the county of Washtenaw this year. This takes no account whatever of the indirect taxes for the support of the national government or of the trusts who have the means to secure the "protection" afforded by tariff legislation.

The reports of the various taxes put upon the assessment rolls of the various townships and cities have been received and tabulated and the grand total for this county amounts to $473,464.69. This does not include the liquor tax, which is not spread on the rolls, but which is used for local purposes and cuts down the amount to be raised by taxation. Neither does it apparently include the village taxes. With these added it will be seen that the grand total closely approximates a half million.

Does this not sustain the contention that the people are more directly interested in their local officials than in those larges and more remote officials whose election stirs up more of partisan spirit?

The various taxes raised in this county this year are apportioned as follows:

State tax........$93,854.58
County tax........46,200.00
City tax.........105,100.00
School tax........121,949.98
Township tax........13,851.02
Street and highways tax........38,926.53
Drain tax........14,821.28
Dog tax........161.00
Road machine tax........1,540.30
Woodchuck tax........1,060.00
Total........$437,464.69
Only one townships, Augusta, reports the raising of any dog tax.
