Superstitions die hard. Among old fashioned cattlemen in Virginia goats are held to be preventive of disease. In Lincolnshire, England, it is common to keep a goat on the ground that it is "healthy for cattle." In Cambridge, England, goats are believed to be a preventive of smallpox.
