New Canal Treaty
A new treaty has been negotiated between the United States and the new republic of Panama by the terms of which Uncle Sam will go ahead with the construction of the great inter-oceanic canal. By its terms it is said the United States will acquire absolute control of the canal zone, a strip of land eight miles wide. The Washington government will fortify this strip, if it so desires, police it and in fact own it, and do with it as best pleases it. The two terminal cities of Colon and Panama will also come under United States control. Panama will receive $10,000,000 for the concession, being about $33 for every man woman and child in the new republic. the treaty will undoubtedly be ratified.
