ANN ARBOR'S DEBATING ;SOCIETY SO DECIDES

Interesting Meeting of Clenadeum - Judges Could Not Agree on Who Won Debate

As usual, the Clenadeum held a very interesting meeting last Friday evening. The first number on the program was an oration by Mr. Clark, his subject being "The Declaration of Independence." Mr. Clark won third place in the oratorical contest last year, and certainly stands a very good show this year.

A paper on "Athletics," by Mr. Hearly was well received. The Clenadeum "Hot Air chronicle," by Mr. Wurster, proved worthy of its title, and strange to say the Benton Harbor football score turned out exactly as he had predicted.

Mr. Peterson gave a very good sketch on "Indian Territory," his former home.

The last number on the program was a debate, "Resolved, That labor unions tend to decrease the skill of labor." Mr. Abbott, for the affirmative, held that labor unions do not encourage skill, in that they offer the same wages to all classes of workmen. Mr. Olds, on the negative side, claimed that union men endeavor to do first class work, on account of the competition with non-union men. Mr. Abbott was supported by Mr. North, and Mr. Olds by Mr. Palmer. The decision of the judges was for the affirmative but it was not unanimous.

After a critic's report by Miss Steeb, the society adjourned for a five minutes recess.

The business meeting was a long one and the most important of the year. The picture of Webster, which the Clenadeum had bought, was at hand, and now the question came up whether it should be given to the library as at first decided, or whether it should be presented to the whole school. it was finally decided that the picture cannot leave the building with the library, in case the latter is removed, but that it should hang in the library so long as the latter remains in the High school building.

Next the important question of debating with the Detroit Central high school came up. Some thought that it would be better to wait and see if Detroit would not challenge Ann Arbor, but as Detroit had done the challenging in both of the former debates, it was considered proper for the Clenadeum to challenge them this year. A committee was chosen and they will take the matter up at once, so that the time, place, and the question for debate can be decided upon at the next meeting, which, on account of Thanksgiving, will not take place until December 44.

It will be remembered that the Clenadeum debating society defeated the Detroit Central team in a joint debate at Newberry hall two years ago this winter. Although it is not known what kind of material the Detroit school can show this year, it is ceertain that Ann Arbor has some first class debaters to put up. If Detroit accepts, the debate will probably take place there and as ample preparations are necessary for a good debate, it will not take place before January.
