Receives a Visit From the Temperance Ladies

_____

WANT TO CONVERT HIM

_____

But Couldn't Make An Impression - Compliments Pass Between the Opponents

_____

Asa Nash, the saloon keeper who is serving a ten days' sentence in the county jail for violating the liquor law, received a visit Sunday from members of the local W.C.T.U.

"We've come to reform you," announced the spokeswoman.

"It's all right with me." answered the saloon man. So the ladies opened fire.

"Too bad you weren't sent to jail for six months instead of ten days," was the first shot from the attacking party.

The defense was cool, and waiting until the smoke from the enemy's guns had cleared away, returned the compliment with: "Do you ladies think you are going to get people into your church by that kind of talk? I thought the churches were to keep people out of jail, not put them in."

"Well, anyway, why don't you go out of the liquor business?" came the second bombardment.

"Buy me out and I will," was the return fire, and the attacking party retired in discomfiture.

The ladies left the building repeating their wish that the sentence had been half a year instead of one-third of a month, and the liquor dealer devoted exactly 16 minutes to exhausting his vocabulary in regard to reform workers.
