JOHN COSTELLO DIED YESTERDAY
Was Well Known Citizen of Dexter
SICK BUT TWO DAYS
Was in the City Thursday on Business--Treasurer of Scio Township
John Costello, of Dexter, died Friday afternoon at his home in that village, of a complication of diseases, aged 71 years.
Mr. Costello was in the city Thursday on business with the county treasurer, and was taken ill while here. He returned home that evening, but his condition rapidly grew worse until death came.
No man was better known in Scio township and eastern Washtenaw than John Costello. He was born in Dexter village in 1832, his parents having been of Irish nativity. He was educated in the village schools and when twenty years of age opened a general store there, which he conducted until 1862, when, in company with John H. Evarts, he purchased the City Mills, which they controlled until 1880. Mr. Costello was also largely interested in the Scio Mills. The milling business not proving as successful financially as he desired, he sold out and again entered the mercantile trade which he carried on for a long period.
His acquaintance and well known probity brought him political honors and he was time and time again elected to office by his fellow citizens, having served several terms as village president and also township clerk and treasurer, which latter office he held at the time of his death.
He was married in 1864, the bride being Miss Mary Harrie. They had eight children, of whom five are living--Mary E., Josephine, Alice, John and Kyran.
