SPORTING NOTES.

Basket ball appears to be more popular than every before.

Major C., 2:04, holds the record of the year for pacing stallions.

Owing to the lack of suitable inducements financially Charles Jarrott, the noted European auto racer, will not compete in America next year.

Frank Matty of Syracuse, N. Y., has sold to Barney Demarest the pacer Harry L., 2:11 1/2. The latter was acting for George Seiner of Chester, Pa.

Jimmy Briggs is very well regarded since he stood up and made McGovern step along for twelve rounds at Boston. California clubs would like to engage him.

Jim Jeffries is consistent, at least in his drawing of the color line. He has even declined an offer from Lew Dockstader to blacken up or do a turn in a minstrel show.

Jack McClelland has returned to new York from the Pacific coast having failed to meet Aurelia Herrera, the Mexican fighter. The authorities twice stopped preparations for the fight.

E. E. Smathers has sold his fast pacer, Shadow Chimes, 2:05, to Joseph Murphy of Troy, N. Y. This horse should prove a first class road horse in the vicinity of his new home. Indeed, it is safe to predict that he will be unbeatable.
