FRED BUBBS WILL MAKE DEFENSE

Fred Bubbs, the negro who assaulted Judge Newkirk's daughter Sunday night, informed a reporter Tuesday that he will plead not guilty.

"You admit do you ot that it was you who attacked Miss Newkirk?" inquired the reporter.

"Yes," sullenly answered Bubbs.

"How can you plead not guilty?" continued the reporter.

Bubbs would not answer, but he had previously informed the officers that his motive was robbery, and that he intended to make his defense on that grounds.

Sheriff Gauntlett said that Bubbs appears fully to realize the gravity of his situation.  He is allowed the liberty of the jail corridor in common with the rest of the prisoners, but he does not care to associate with his fellow inmates.  He sits by himself throughout the day and evening and very seldom has anything to say to the other prisoners, who are disposed to be friendly and include him in their efforts to while away the tedium of the long hours.

Bubbs' mother says she will be able to secure the $2,000 bail, and that she expects to provide money for the carrying on of the case.
