Of exceedlng appropriateness was the memorial service in Ilnivcrsity Hall last Sunday to the late Prof. Et. S. Frieze, who has given thirty-five years of liis noble life to the up-building of the argest Unlversity on the western continent. To him may be rightfully ascribed much of her high standing and lofty deals. Under his presidency came tbc building of the main building, the admission of women, the establishment of the diploma relation of high schools, from the Germán plan ; as well as numberlesa minor advancements, emanating from his resourceful brain. Dr. Angelí feelingly recounted lus virtues, and all of his colleagues bore witness wlth a tear to the fldelity of his portrayal of that gentle life-work. Profs. Frieze and Cocker, by their quiet Chrlstian characters, living as they taugbt, won In a peculiar manner tlie love as well as reverence of thcir pupils. But rarely have teachers ever exerclsed more wide spread inlluence ior lasting good than these rich 11 ves. Their memories wlll always live as an inspiration in the hearts of their friends. Fortúnate will be the University if t can ever, in a measure even, find others to so exstlt their stations. It seems as though such men only come once in a generation. The music of the spheres in his souli and his entbtwlum for the good, the true and the beautiful, was infectious, so that the radiance of his face, as the quick brain brought forth grand thoughts, is ever memorable to all with wliom he came in contact. From the Boston Sunday Herald, of March Otli, we take the following opinión : "What are your universities doing f or the people ? The University of Michigan is uplifting education througliout the whole state, and lias done, perhaps, more than any other American instltution to Ilústrate how the university may be applied in a partial way to the upbuikling of the life of the American people. Cornell University luis tuisen a large part of the state of New York under its control, and through the agency of state schoUirships has glyen to the sons of the humblest New Yorkers the best educational facilities to be had in the country." Good health can only be seeurcd by pure air. Pure air in a city like thls can only be secured through a tliorou;rh systcm of sewerage. The people will have the decisión of thls qucstion in tlieir own hands on Monday, Marcli 31st. There onght not to be a partiële of doubt as to what tlieir verdict will be. Give us sewers, or malaria will give us death. The republicana In congress proposc to reduce the tarifT on sugar at least 50 per cent. Tliere is so linie manufactured here and the tariff does not scim to stiinulate iUproüuction.
