The party of progrees and truo patrlotism Is the democratie party.- Detroit Freo Press. History not only tells us, but many of our citizens - and not very old citizens either - can renieinber very clearly sorne of the schetnes of patriotism(?) and proJïressQ?) cbarnploned by this great party. Commencing wlth the fugitive slave law for instance, allowing soutlicrn slave owners and slave drivers to liunt colored people through the northern states with blood hounds ! Tbat was one of the foundation rocks of tbat great "progressive party !" Is it not a pleasing one to turn to, my democratie friend? Yet that law was but one step of the many black and disgraceful ones taken by that party to perpetúate slavery. Coming down to 18G0 what political name did the men wear who attempted to prevent Abraham Lincoln f rom passthrough Baltimore and taking hls seat as president of the United States? They were callcd "plug uglies," but every man of them voted the democratie ticket. "What party did the men belong to who passed the acts of secession in the various southern legislatures in 1861? Was there a republican among them ? Did any republians help man the guns that first flred on Maj. Anderson's men in Fort Sumpter? Was there one republican among the gray ciad soldiere standing guard over the poor, half starved boys in blue at Andersonville, Libby, Saulsbury, or any of the southern prisons where our boys were penned up like swine? To what party did the members of the Ku-Kluk-Klan belong? To what party to-daydothe "Rankin Rangers," "Leflore Tigers," "Warren Warriors," "Raymond Rifles." "Terry Terribles,"etc, etc., the organizations that are "ahvays there'' when an election isto be held in Mlssisslppi, belong? Are there any republlcans among them? WI11 the Free Presa please show U9 one progressive ïiicasurc advocated by the democratie party ? Will it show us one patriotic measure advocated by the democratie party? There is a splendid opportunity for it to show its ingenuity. The Detroit Tribune of this morning states tliat Eugene E. Beal lias been confirmed as postmaster at Ann Arbor. Wonder how some of the democratie subscribers of tbe Ypsilanti Commercial like tbe "Reminiscences" written up by Ex-Edltor Pattison? They must be all and wormwood to the truly unterrified. Tbe democratie party has fought every measure of progress and patriotisin championed by the republican party for the past quarter of a century. It now fights the doctrine of protection to home industries, which is on a par with its record on everything. On Monduy whlle in Kalamazoo the editor of the Couiukr visited the Ladies' Library Association, one of the strongest and best conducted organizations of its kind in the country. Thcy own a handsome building, well stocked with books, and have made a good start on an art collection by the purchase of paintings. One of its features is a club meeting on Mondays where the ladies gather to liear essay?, recitation?, or papers on literary, historical and social subjeets. Tlicy are largely attended by the ladies of Kulamazoo and vicinity who llnd theinselvea greatly beneftted by the exercises.
