Tlie man, whose picture we place above tliis sketch, is Mr. Samuel Gomicr-, who was elccted president of the American Federation of Labor at the recent convention at Coluinbus, Ohio. Mr. (Jcinpers is a native of London, where he was bom of Dutch parenis about forty years ago. He came to this country w lien but thirteen years old. Ever gince bis tenth ycar he has worked at his trade na ciifar maker, and has been a conspicuous member of the International cigar makers union, from lts organization in 1804 and at the time of his election to bis present ofllcp, was its vice-president. He is a man of sound judgment and ot clear percoptions of dtity.
