The total expenditure for roads in Conuecticut last year aniounted to $1,156,096.74. The largest amount was pent in New Haven county, being $150,74B. Fairfield county was second, with a total expenditure of $144,362. In Hartford county the year's expenditure aggregated $110,018. Tho total BUin expended by the towns in the state for roads during the year was $721,467. In the ten eities then reporting, the road niaintenance amounted to $360,733, and the boroughs expended $üT,8U5. Notwithstunding these large expenditures, the public thoroughfares in Connecticut are in no way as good as they ought to be. The present winter hos been the severest in years on the country roads, and from every art of the state there is complaint of ruined roadbeds, the wheels of vehidos in the country eutting through the best inutcriul used fti hardening.
