O. B. Cliurch, the patriarch printer of Ann Arbor, whocommenced the printing business in Maren 1835 in Ann Arbor, will retire afler this week from active service. He scarted Iearning the trade in the year mentioned, working for E. P. Gardiner, in the A rgus office, and has worked at the case ever since, except one year In the service of Uncle Sam ia the Mexican war, servlng in the navy. and one year in the late war of the rebellion, erviug as a corporal in Company H, 5th Mich. Volunteer Infantry. From 1840 to May 1844 Mr. Church was in the U. S. nayy and salled around the world, the iliip on wliich he served, (U. 8. snip Constellation) being sent to China to look out for the interestsof Americana In China daring what was known as the opium war between England and China. On the return from the latter place the vessel stopped at the Sandwich Inlands and prevented Lord George Paulet from taking possession of those Islands in the name of England. On leavlng here the ship went to Monterey on tue coast of Calfornia In 1843, just at the time gold was discovered by Capt. Sutter while putting up hls sawmill, the discovery was called wast) ing diggings, some flve or six years later the placer diggings were discovered, which was called tbe pocket by minera, and no water was used.
