The Grand Artny of the Republic is a unique onjanization. In the words of a past commander-!n-cliief : "No cliild can be bom hito it; no proclamation of President, edict of King, or ukase of Czar can conimnnd admission; no universlty or in8litution of leaRling cnu issue a diploma authorizing its holder toentrance; no act of Congress or Parliament secures recognit!on;the wealth of a Vanderbilt can not purchase tbe positiou ; its doors swing open only upon presentation of the bit of paper, torn, worn, begrimed it may be, which certifies to an honorable discharge from thearmies or navies of the natlon during the war against rebellion." And unlike any other association, no "new blood" can come In; there areno growing ranks from whicli recrults can be drawn into the Grand Army of the Kepublic. Witli tlieeonsunimation of peace tbrough victory, lts rolls were closed forever. lts lines are steadily and swlftly growinj: thinngr, and the ceaseless tramp of its columns is witli ever-lasting tread; the gaps in the picket line grow wider; dny by day details are made from the reserve, summoned into the shadowy regions to return to touch elbows no more; untll by aud by, only a solitary aentinel shall stand guard, waitingr till the bugle cali from beyond shall muster out the last comrade of the Grand Army of the Republic- George S. Merrill, in New England Magazine.
