Prono C. K. Van Geisou wc liuvc rccelved several copies of a live paper gotten up by the Sam. J. Randall Post of the Q. A. R., at Weatherford, Texas. It was gotten up for the Boston encatnpment and is headcd "Helio Yanks I" and "Weuns to You-uns." It must be rather disconniging for the Democracy of this state wlien the head of their ticket already gives it iip. At the Lansing fair in a speech he snid : "Mr. Turner has obtained such a start tliat I do not cxpect to ovcrtake hiin In this cuiiipnign. There will certalnly bc a good governor wlien Gov. Turner assumes the chair." We denounce the iniquity of the McKinley BUI to increase uuïff taxes for the benefit of favored manufacturera, wlio have bought that favor wlth money furnlsheil the republican party to buy and corrupt voters. - Dein. platform. The platform builders evidently have not studied the MeKinley bill, else they would have known that it decreases the tarijf over $75,000,000 per onnut. The latest thing out is that the geirymander of the last Ohio legislature will not go because one whole townslilp ncar Cincinr.ali was put in no district. This disfranchises 200 yoters, and if that number coukl be depiived of their ballots 200,000 might also be shut out. Thus the act ia nullifled. Tiie blunder was a bad one and the demócrata have no clear way out of their trouble. Last weck'a Washtenaw Post says: "In Iowa no man can vote who fouglit on the Itebel side during the Eebellion." This is a pretty bad break for a man who intends to be a congressman. We hope ourbrother knows more tliati that, but if he does that puts him in a worse dilemma; that of attemptina; to mislead and to deceive his readers. IIow much confidence can they have in a paper which glvcs them ench bald-headed nonsense? By a report of the Agricultural departnient, Jast Issucel, it is shown thilt twothirds of the lower península of Michigan is fitted for susjar beet culture. Thls is destined to add another valuable erop to the already divorsified agricultural products of this state. The new erop helps in turee ways : it is a valuable one in itself, the land taken by it is removed from competition with wheat, corn, oats, etc, and it aflbrds one more artlcle to fall back upon in seasons unpropitious for the old crops. Strauss, the Waltz king and imperial court ball director of Austria appears in Detroit at the Kink Saturday afternoon, evening and Monday evening with bis offii immense orchestra brought from Vienna. The editor of The Courier bas had the good fortune to henr the ruatchless composer and leader playing, and can vouch for the fact that he has no superior as a band-master. The railroads give reduced round trip tickets and hold their nifíht trains until the close of the concert. Quite a number of people are going from Washtenaw, and we know thcy will be well paid. Judge Winans was put at the head of the opposition ticket siraply because he was a farmer in oider to catch farmer votes. We doubt the success of their sclieme, for the farmers have just had a governor for four years and recognize that to be their share now. Tliey know, too, that a governor of Michigan can neither liuit nor help their industry. He makel uo laws, lays no taxes, has nu influence on the weather or prices of produce. They are Republicana and prefer a Kcpublican executlve to a Democratie one, especially in these times. Gapt. E. P. Allen was renominated by acclumation, for the second time and in November next he will be re-elected for his third term in congress by a largely Inereased majorlty overany given him at any former election. Ilis work in congrees appears without blemish and is not only satisfactory but is exceedingly gratifymg to his constituents all over the district. For such work he was elected in the lirst place and to continue it he will be re-elected as above stated. The parCelina out of the various offices in the district that come under the control of a congreísman are incidental and secondary to the real work of a member, yet this secondary work is usuully accompanied with more friction than all the other work he has to do. With all, however, except the seekers after office and a few of their personal friends this "friction'' is but for a d:iy. It is always present in every party in power, among those who don't get what they want, but the people are malnly interested to know that the real work in hand is receivlngcareful and intelligent attention. In this respect no man in this district can make reusonable complaint against Cap. Allen. - Hillsdale Leader.
