The advent of Johnstone has started a considerable aninunt of discussion upon (ha subject of mind reading. In that line Dr. Gatchell of the Univcreity did some very interesting work last Wedncsday at The Courier oflïce in tlie presonce of a conimittee consisting of J. J. Goodyear, W. W. Watts and the t-ditor of this paper. Wliile the Professor was out of the room the conimittee selected a word in the dictionary on page 804. They thought tliey would get a "sticker'1 so "mueilage" was seleuted. The next step was for two of the conimittee to takc a carriuge drive around town, turninj; ncarly every corner, mul mnkiiig some thirtecn blocks. In the meantime the otherracniber stayed in a bnck room wlth i)r. üatchell. On their return lie was seeure'y blindfolded in the followlng manner. A folded glove over eacU eye was held o place by a handkerchief tied tightly aboat his liead. Over his head placed a deep black cap, coming down on his shouldersand tied wlth a string about the neck. Tliis cap was cxamtned and found to contaln two thicknesses, - one of feit, the onter of slik, appearlog eutlrely tight. At the T5oetor's request tlie route was tracod out with the Jliicrs 011 n piece of paper, also the pare and word in the dictlonary. Tlicu with all the lioodwinks on he was led to the carriage, glven the rcins and with the committee started to drive over the course. Wlth wtalp iu one hand (which he contlnually plied) and reins in the other, he drove over the cx■ iit which had prevlously been taken by the committee alone. A quecr sisrht it was to sce such mad driving by a blindfolded man. Id fact the other occupanis of the carriüge were not exactly at ease when they went around sharp corners on two wheels. As quickly as the horses could run over the route they were glltded back to The CouniEii building, where the " mind reader" nerrous!y(?) tuined over the leaves of the dietionary, coming uneriingly to page SGJ, and calling for a pencil and paper, he wrote out the letters m-u c-i-l-a-2-e. Tliese last were done with all the blindfolds with an overcoat also over the head. During the performance he supplcmentcd the program by removing lii cufl', rolling up bis sleeve and sinking a needle over an inch into lijs arm without wincliijr or sliouing blooil. Prof. G itchrll does nol esplain how it WE.S dono, but denies that it is " mlndreading." lie has challenged Johnstone, and bas put up a $300 check which he offers to Johnstone if he can " mindread" the word on its back. In all thia he has done the public a good service by ezpotlng a fiaud wbo might mlsleftd some.
