Tlie gentleman who will be the ncxt jfovernor of Wisconsln ha9 been known to fame until lately clii( fly as the author oí Peck's Bad Boy, anti the editor of a comic paper. He was born fifty years ago in Wisconsin, became a printer and when the war broke out left the printing office and enlisted in the array serving througbout the war. After the war he carne to New York and worked for a while at his old trade and Uien went to La Grosse, Wis , where he started a paper. Here he began the series of coraic articlea, that have gained for him a reputation is a humorist of thn farcial type. Mr. Peck has lately lived in Milwaukee wliere he owna "Peck's Sun," whicb has been a great success pecuniarily. In April last he was elected mayor of Milwaukee on a "Personal liberty," platform. He roceived the whole vote of the foreign element and obtalned a big majority over his republican opponent. This victory led to his nominntion for governor. The caropaign in Wisconsin was on the "Bennett blll" which made it compulsory to teach English in the public schools. A large part oí the populatlon of Wisconsin is Germán and Scandinavian. They have been accustomed to have thelr children taught in their own lunguage. In religious belief they are pretty evenly divided between the Roman Cntholic and the Lutheran churches, they also always luive had tueir own pharochial schools. The consequence was that tbe clergy of both nomiiiations was solid for the democrats. The result was that for the flrst time in many years the demócrata are in complete control of everythlng in Wisconsin.
