After much waiting and expectation the Ann Arbor & Ypsilanti Street Rail way has commenced business and i now an assured success. Cars com menced .running Saturday and are now uiaking regular trips between the two great educational cities of Michigan This is a matter of great interest to the people of these cities, and the enter prise will surely have a tendency to traild up not only the intervening terri tory, but both niunicipalities, for such enterprises never goes unrewarded, anc the advantages these two cities now pre sent to the world as places of residence are unequaled in this conntry. Whai with our University, our unequaled ant prosperous Normal School, our famous liigh schools and Business Colleges, our wonderful carative mineral Bprings, our beautiful scenery unsurpassed in the west, our low taxes and splendid pronperity, where can the equal be found now that rapid transit has been added to the other great advantages ? Now that things have settled down to a business basis, perhaps a little review of the history of the enterprise may not be out of place. The road was projected by Haines Brothers of New York. They carne to Ypsilanti first and secured a charter from tliat city, theu they secured the right of way on what is 'known as the south Ypsilanti road from the township officials and the residents thereon. The next move was to interest local capitalists, so they carne to Ann Arbor and interested a large number of our citizens to invest in the road, the list being as follows: J. T. Jacobs, Chas. E. Hiscock, G. F. Allmendinger, H. T. Morton, F. A. Howlett, J. E. Beal, Dr. W. B. Smith, Thos. J. Keech, A. L. Xoble, M. J. Fritz, W. D. Harriman, J. H. Wade, Prof. B. W. Thompson, Prof. C. G. Taylor, M. C. LeBeau, O. M. Martin and Hutzel & Co. Theu capitalista in Ypsilanti invested an equal amount so that the two cities are alike in interest. Nut until after making a thorough investigation of the cost, expenses and success of similar roads throughout the country, did our local people resolve to uiake the venture, and so put their money in. It was thought at first that a gas or naphtha motor would be purchased for the road, but upon investigation it was found that they were not sufticiently perfected to do the work of the road, consequently a Porter motor to start with, and use until a better one should present itself in the market, was decided upon. The company believe they will liave a better oue before the yearcloses. But the present oue is less and less jectionable the more it is used. Tiie construction of the road was let to the firm of Donovan, Morgan & Co., of St. Louis, Mo. On account of the neceseary rapidity of doing the work, because of the lateness of the season, the building of the road eost considerable more tliun it otherwise WOuld, and more than they expected, but they have done their work wel! as regarde grade, trestles, etc., and have given good satisfaction. A three year's contract has been signed by the Aim Arbor and Ypsilanti Street Railway Co., and the Ann Arboi Street Railway Co., wh'ereby the latter is to transfer the passengers of the fonner road at tlie city limits, and a fare of ten cents for the single trip is made, tickets to be procured of the conductors one either road. After spring opens the Ypsilanti cars will be brought down toun on the city road by the electric motor, thu.s making it still more convenient for the people. Until theu the city cars making connection at the city limits will be labeled "For Ypsilanti!" The city road will build their line from the city ïimits to Hill st., down Hill to State, on State north to Huron, down Huron west to the Court House, as soon as the weather will pennit, thus landing passengere at anyof the prominent parte of the city. The Ypsilanti road guarantees the city road .f4.00 per day at 1 '.v. per passenger and the latter ia to receive one cent per passenger after $5 have been received. A mortgage of .t40,000 has been placed apon tli" road to secure the bonds, which are held here and in Ypsilanti. For the accommodation of the public we publish the following time table of the road : For the week commencing Tuesday, January l.'ith, and onding Jan. I8th, the cars w ill run as follows: Leave Ypsilanti 7:30, 9:30, 10:30. 12:00 a. in.; 2:15, :j : 35, 5:15, 6:45, S : L5, 9 : 45 p. m. Leave Ann Arbor, junction of electric raliway, 8:15, 9:45, 11:15, a. ni. 1:30, 3:00, 4:30, 6.00, 7:30, 9:00, 10:30 p. m. Saturday extra trip leaves Ypsilantí 11 : 15 p. ni., Aun Arbor, 11 : 45 p. m. Sunday, leaves Ypsilanti 9 : 45, 11 : 15 ! 2 : l.í, a. m, ; 2 : 15, 8 : 45, 5 : 15, 6 : 45 p. mi. Leaves Aun Afbor, junction electric railway, 10:30, 12:00, a. m. ; 1 : 30, 3:00 4:30, 6:00, 7 : 00 p. m. Note - On Sunday, the 9 : 45 and 11 : 15 a. ni. cara will run froin the córner of Cross and Adama street, Ypsilantí. Coupon ticket, 10 cents, entitles passenger to continuous ride over both roads, for sale by conductors on all cars.
