There are bonds of all sort-s in this world of ours, Letters of friendship and tietí of flowers, And true lovers' knots, I wen; The girl and the boy are bound by a kiss, But there'8 never a bond, old friend, like thls- We have drunk frotn the saine canteen 1 It was sometimes watr and sometimes niilk, And siiiiit-i iüit-.s apple jack flno as silk; But whatever tbe tipplO has been. We shared it together in bane or bliss, And I warm to you, friend, when I think of this - We have drunk f rom the same canteen 1 The rich and the great sit down to dine, And they quaff to each other in sparkling wino From giasses of crystal and green; Bat I euess ia their golden potatioiu they misa The warnith of rogard to be found in this- We have drunk from the saine canteen t We have shared our blankets and tents together. And have marchad and foutfut in all kinds of weather. And hungry and f uil we hare been; Had days of battle and days of rest, But this inomory I cline to and love the best- We have drunk from the same canteen t Fot when woonded I lay on the outer slope, With my blood nowing fast, anxl but littie hope Upon which my faint spirit couid lean; Oh then, I remember, yon crawled to my sida, And, bleeding do fast it seemed both must hare dled, We drank from the same canteen.
