Washington's Tour
In 1789 General Washington made a tour through New England, traveling in his own carriage. In the "Eeminiscences of Woreester" a spectator describes his equipage as follows: "1. A gentleman in uniform on a beautiful cVipple-gray horse. "2. Next, two aids on dapple-gTay horses in uniform. "3. Bay horses, with two negro boys as riders, the horses attached to a traveling- carriage, in which sat General Washington. "4. Behind was the baggage wag'on, with two bay horses, containing1 the bag-g-age." In every place through which the General passed the inhabitants of all ranks, ag"es and conditions testifled their joy at beholding the man who had won lndependence for the colonies, and was now the first citizen of the new Eepoblic.
