Colonel Charles Heywood
Colonel Charles Heywood the new commander of the marine corps, was born in Watorville, Maine, October 3, 1839 and entered the marine corps in 1858. He at once saw active service during the Staten Island quarantine riots. He then did duty in African waters ; at the outbreak of the civil war he was in the "Cumberland."
