City Treasurer Watts has given us the following figures in regard to taxes returned thia year as uncollectable. The total amount seems large from the fact that some of the personal taxes levied were upon people who have left the city and there is no way of collecting it: Real estáte returned $125 86 Sidewalk tax returned 15 40 Personal tax returned 499 50 Total $640 76 Real estáte rejected 47 26 Con8idering the fact that the roll is one-third larger than ever before the record is good. From the annual report of the city treasurer, we find the actual expenses of this city for the past year, up to February lst, are as follows in the different funds : Contingent fnud $14,749 26 Street f und 9,4J5 40 Fireman's fund 5,858 17 Poliee fund 1,957 71 Poor fund 1,97125 Water fnnd 5,119 25 City Cemetery fund 8152 University hospital bonds 4,000 00 Widening of División st 600 00 Total $43,762 5ti The expenses of the city government, as compared with last year are as follows : Streets cost $2.011 66 less Pólice '■ 1,940 78 more Firedep't' 1,316 28 " Poor " 1.254 09 " Water ' 166 l:i ■ Cemetery " 77 88 " Contingent exp. eost 312 22 lesa Hospital bonds 4.000 00 more Widening of División 6t 600 00 more In comparison with other years we find the balances on hand Fet. lst, as follows : Feb. lst 1889 $ 8.055 57 "1890 10,993 02 " 1891 11,190 70 The total expenses for 1889-90 were f37,730.78 against $43,752.56 the past year. The difference is just about covered by the hospital bonds paid, and the widening of División street, making the ordinary expenses of the city government just about the same as last year.
