A short timo ago Gou. Russell A. Alper, oí Detroit, while upon a trip through :he South raA across an oíd acquaintance )f bis boyhood, said the Chicago Mail Club man. Fortune had not smiled very [iropitiously upon the latter, while, as is well known, the Dotroiter is one of the richest men in the country. "Suy, General, you've been pretty lucky in a financia] way since you and I wi'iv boys togethor, haven'tyou?" said the Southierner. "IIow did you manage to do it, eh?" "Oh, yes; I've been fairly successful, I think. I have been in thfi luinber business, you know." "Buying and selling lumber?" "Well, not exactly - buyiug and selling pine timber land." "Stillatit?" "I'm doing a little vork vet - yes." "Can't you take me into some of your piue land deals?" "I presume I could - yes, and 111 do it to. I'll take you into the very next deal I inake. I have a piece of land now in view, and if I buy it you shall come in with me, and I think we can rnake a little out of it." A few days later the two gentlemen again met. "Well, I've bought that piece of timber land I spoke to you about the other day, remarked Gen. Alger. "And I've got a purchaser for it, too. I'm going to sell it to him, and I'll have the deed made out from the original owner direct to the new purchaser, so we will not need to appear in the deal at all." The next day Gen. Alger met his old time friend and handed him his check for $1,000. "That's your share of our profits," he said. "I turned $4,000 in the deal and counted you in, you see, as a one-fourth partner in the transaction." The old gentleman drew himself up with true southern dignity and said very icily : "'Well, General, do you think this is treating me fair and square ? If I had known that you did not intend to make me an equal partner with you in this matter I certainly would not have considered the project for a moment - not for a moment, sah I"
