In Java the woodpeckers bore into the .telegraph poles, deceived by the buzzinjf sound made by the wires into the belief that insects are concealetd in the wood. In Norway the woodpeckers have been found to bore into the poles, but more curious is the fact that in Norway bears have torn away the large stones placed at the bottom of the poles, ileceived by the sound into thinking that bees and their store of honey were tu be found beneath.
