The coaitest commenced the day af ter the funeral, the varkras candidatos going to work with a system, establishing headquarters as if there "were a whole legislature to work upoai instead of one governor. The govwnor lieard the claims of each ispirant in-gel, with. the result of givlng the eeat to Perkins. llishop W. Perkins was born in Rochester, Ohio, Oct. 18th, 1841. He atteaided Knox Academy at Balisburg, 111., read law, and was admltted to the bar at Ottawa, 111., In 1867. He feerved four years as a soldier in the Union army and was adjutant and captain of the lGth U. S. colored Infantry for thrce years. He has servied as probate judge of Labette county, Kansas. In 1873-1883 lie was judge of tlLC llth judicial district of Kansas. He was elected to the 48th congress as congressman at large, and was re-elected to the three followinR congresses as a republican. He will iio doubt make a very efficiënt senator.
