While I appreciate the dntendcd compliment I desire to eay and have it distinetly understood that I am not a candidate for the sènate and shall not bc, under any cirCTimstances. Rumors and statements tothe contraa-y are without the Blightfest loundation. Of course the action ■oí the Cass oounty convention was ft perfect surprise to me, and I knew nothing of it until I eaw it ,in the papers. My only ambitioa is to represent a Michigan constitueney in the lower house of congress aol I have too desire to change that service for a seat in the United States senate. There must be no readdng between fche limes in this statement, for I mean what I say, and most emphaticalIy Just as I say it. My name must not be used in that connection." Cleveland what he thought of the tarifi (iiiestian. "Between you and Ine," saiid he, with a twinkle in his eye, "and this need not go down, I rton't laiow a d d thins about it." So all liis knowledge of that subject was acquired after he got into the 'Wliito House and was surrounded with all the dietractioms of that place. Yet 'iD-day. lic is held up as one of the toost profoimd Ihinkers and masters tiï tariíí logislatioin.
